It's not every day that you get to step away from the familiar and immerse yourself in an experience that feels both timeless and thrillingly alive. It had been a while since I last joined a proper field excursion, so when the opportunity arose to visit Peraya, a serene Bidayuh village just an hour from Kuching, I couldn't resist. The promise of a bamboo rafting adventure was calling, and it delivered more than I could have imagined.

Into the Woods: A Trek Through History and Nature

Our day began not on the water, but on foot, with a guided jungle walk that led us through a tapestry of farmland and secondary forest. The air was thick with the scent of earth and leaves, a refreshing change from the city's hustle. As we ventured deeper, our guides, whose knowledge of the land was as deep as the forest itself, pointed out trees heavy with wild durian and other seasonal fruits — a testament to the incredible generosity of Sarawak's landscape.

A short way into our trek, we paused at the village's skull house. Standing before this powerful monument to Bidayuh heritage, listening to our guide's respectful and fascinating stories from the headhunting era, was a truly humbling experience. It added an unexpected depth to our journey, connecting us to the generations who have called these forests home.

The highlight of our walk was the magnificent seven-stage waterfall that awaited us at the end of the trail. After a recent rain, the path was a little muddy, making the trek feel like a proper adventure. But every steady step was worth it. The sight and sound of the cascading water, hidden among tall rock walls and hanging vines, were breathtaking. Reaching the cool spray and beautiful natural pools at the top felt like a well-earned reward.

A Riverside Feast: The Magic of Bamboo Cooking

After a vigorous trek, our appetites were well and truly primed for lunch, and what a lunch it was. Waiting for us on the riverbank was a culinary experience unlike any other, prepared entirely using the traditional method of bamboo cooking.

Succulent chicken, fresh fish, and fluffy rice were all slow-cooked over an open fire inside bamboo tubes, infusing them with a delicate, smoky flavour and the fragrance of forest herbs. It was one of the most memorable meals I've ever had in the field. For many of us, the biggest surprise was the tea, also brewed in bamboo, which had a wonderfully soft, earthy aroma. To finish, we shared slices of the sweetest local pineapple I have ever tasted — a perfect, refreshing end to the feast.

Floating Through a Canopy of Green

With full bellies and recharged spirits, it was time for the main event: bamboo rafting. Stepping onto the raft — a simple, elegant vessel of buoyant bamboo poles lashed together — felt like stepping back in time. The connection to the water is immediate, far more intimate than on any modern boat.

The river was clean and cool, and for most of the journey, we drifted beneath a majestic canopy of overhanging trees. The filtered sunlight danced on the water, creating a feeling of utter peace and seclusion. While the river was mostly tranquil, there were moments of excitement as we navigated submerged rocks and fallen branches. This is where the skill of our local guides truly shone. With expert precision and good humour, they handled every challenge, making the journey feel both safe and genuinely fun.

As we drifted towards our final destination, I was struck by how fortunate we are to have such authentic, scenic, and culturally rich experiences so close to Kuching. The Peraya bamboo rafting adventure is more than just an activity — it's a profound immersion into the heart of Sarawak's Bidayuh culture and its stunning rainforest ecology. For anyone looking for a professional, yet wonderfully wild, escape, this is an experience I can wholeheartedly recommend.
